NSDAR’s ROTC Bronze and Gold Medal Program
Annually, the Chapter requests from each of Guam’s public and private high schools that have a JROTC program the name of their outstanding Cadet who is qualified to receive NSDAR’s JROTC Bronze Medal. In 2018, we expanded the awarding of the JROTC Bronze Medal to outstanding Cadets to include those who attend public and private high schools located in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. In 2018, we awarded 7 NSDAR Bronze Medals to outstanding cadets attending 4 public high schools, 1 Department of Defense high school, 1 private high school and 1 high school located in CNMI. One of the schools had just established its JROTC Air Force Program in 2018. We were able to attend 5 of the JROTC ceremonies and personally award the DAR Bronze Medal. We had anticipated that at a minimum we would be awarding 7 Bronze Medals in 2019. Instead, we only awarded one. In our discussions with JROTC Instructors, we learned that the schools had cancelled their 2019 Award Ceremonies. Guam and CNMI were hit with a series of typhoons (hurricanes) and tropical storms between July and November 2018 that caused delays in the start as well as the cancellation of school. Except for the private high school, all JROTC award ceremonies were cancelled across the board in 2019. It is our hope to resume giving the DAR JROTC Bronze medals to the 7 high schools as well as to the other high schools who have chosen in the past to not nominate a Cadet. In addition, the Chapter annually requests the name of an outstanding Army ROTC Cadet at the University of Guam. In addition to awarding the DAR Gold Medal the Chapter also awards the outstanding Cadet with a $200 honorarium. Over the past several years, the University has chosen not to nominate an outstanding Army Cadet.
