This year will mark the 79th Anniversary of Guam's liberation from Japanese occupational forces during WWII.
Guam is the only US soil to have been occupied by a foreign country. From December 8, 1941 when Japan invaded Guam until August 1944, when the US completely freed the island, 1,880 US service members and 1,170 Chamorros died.
For Memorial Day, our Chapter's members along with Guam's community helped to place US and Guam flags that were lit at night into the ground for the 3,050 people who died.
This annual event is sponsored by the US National Park Service at the site of the heaviest fighting that took place on July 21, 1944. 2019 was our 6th year of helping to place lights on the flags and to place flags into the ground.
