PROJECT PATRIOT
Project Patriot started out as a simple project to benefit our Active Duty Military and Retired Veterans. It was started by Regent Tamara Turner of the Cactus Wren Chapter NSDAR in Phoenix, Arizona, in December of 2012.
A letter was sent to all Associate Members asking if their chapters would be interested in participating. In February of 2013 the Pacific Daily News and the Mariana Variety newspapers ran an announcement of this project for the Mariana Islands Chapter NSDAR. The PDN ran this announcement for the entire month. This was important as 600 of our National Guard had deployed to Afghanistan for a year–long TDY . The coupons could be picked up at Navy Base Guam and Andersen Air Force Base. The commissaries would honor coupons for up to six (6) months after expiration. The un-expired coupons could be used off base.
Over the years this has expanded to include a cookie drive for our airmen stationed at Anderson Air Force Base and gift baskets to our Veterans clinic for their staff and veteran patients.
We send out our heartfelt thank you to our Associate Members and their Chapters for the donations and coupons you send to us. We've donated over 200 pounds of coupons to the United Serviceman’s Organization. We have partnered with the USO which takes the coupons you send to us to the Navy’s and Air Force’s commissaries. The USO also retains coupons at its drop in centers. Due to Guam’s military installations’ tight security restrictions, our members do not have base access. While we presently have one member with base access, we have decided to continue our long standing partnership that we have established with the USO. With the rising cost of food, you are helping our military families to expand their purchase power. Their purchase power is further expanded as many of Guam’s civilian grocery stores also accept coupons for their commodities.
